The Japanese characters for Shiatsu

Bruce Cary is a Licensed Shiatsu Therapist (LMT 1806) who has been practicing for over 20 years at Maui Shiatsu Therapy in Wailuku. Shiatsu is traditional Japanese deep pressure point massage therapy which can help people relax and cope with issues such as stress, muscle pain, nausea, anxiety, depression, and more.

What is Shiatsu?

The word Shiatsu is from the Japanese shi, meaning finger, and atsu, meaning pressure. "Shiatsu technique refers to the use of fingers and palm of one's hand to apply pressure to particular sections on the surface of the body for the purpose of correcting the imbalances of the body, and for maintaining and promoting health. It is also a method contributing to the healing of specific illnesses."

— Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in December 1957

Theory & Practice of Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself. Shiatsu could be called "Acupuncture without needles." Both Acupuncture and Shiatsu share a theoretical base of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the same way that the body has a circulatory system which carries blood around the body, it also has meridians (pathways or channels) along which energy (chi) flows to and from the organs.

Within a shiatsu massage treatment, pressure is applied to the body with the aim of improving and balancing the flow of energy along the meridian pathways that cover the entire body. It is when the energy in these pathways is blocked and out of balance in relation to each other that ill health occurs. Acupressure points along the meridians are stimulated with thumbs rather than needles for specific purposes.

Shiatsu is holistic. This means it addresses the whole person - not just the physical body, but also the psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of the person. The integration and balancing of these four areas enables well-being to be restored. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being.

Shiatsu treatments are performed on a padded mat on the floor. The client remains fully dressed and should wear loose fitting clothes and socks. It is best not to eat a large meal or drink alcohol prior to a treatment.
